Skrillex's musical journey began when he was a teenager, influenced by punk rock and electro house. He joined the post-hardcore band From First to Last as the lead singer in 2004, and recorded two studio albums with them: Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount and Heroine. However, he left the band in 2007 due to vocal cord problems and a desire to pursue a solo career.

As a solo artist, Skrillex experimented with different genres and styles, releasing his first EP Gypsyhook in 2009. He then adopted his stage name Skrillex and started producing dubstep, a genre of electronic music characterized by heavy bass and complex rhythms. He released his second EP My Name Is Skrillex for free online in 2010, followed by Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites later that year. The latter EP was a huge success, earning him his first Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronica Album.
